Duplicate payments in freight rarely arrive labeled as duplicates. They show up as valid-looking invoices with familiar shipment references, slightly altered invoice numbers, or reissued bills submitted through a different channel.

Not all freight audits happen at the same point in the billing cycle. Some organizations review invoices before payment is released. Others review after payment has already gone out. And some use a combination of both.

Accessorial charges are one of the most common sources of freight billing complexity. They are also one of the most common sources of invoice disputes, unexpected costs, and repeatable exceptions.

Freight invoices rarely look “wrong.” That is why overpayment happens. The issues that cost the most are usually small, repeatable mistakes that slip through when teams are moving fast, approvals are manual, and invoice rules are not consistently enforced.

Freight invoices are not just paperwork. They are where small billing issues, inconsistent carrier practices, and avoidable accessorials quietly turn into overspend. The problem is that most invoices look “fine” at a glance. Totals are rarely the giveaway. The risk lives in the details: how a rate was applied, whether an accessorial is valid, whether the shipment data matches what actually moved, and whether the invoice follows your contract rules.
