Most freight billing issues do not start at the audit step. They start at the invoice. When carriers submit invoices with inconsistent formatting, missing reference fields, incomplete documentation, or charges that do not tie back to agreed-upon terms, exceptions are inevitable. The audit catches them, but the root cause was never the audit. It was the lack of clear billing standards communicated to the carrier before the first invoice arrived.

Not all freight audits happen at the same point in the billing cycle. Some organizations review invoices before payment is released. Others review after payment has already gone out. And some use a combination of both.

Freight bills come in fast, in different formats, and often with just enough variation to make invoice review harder than it should be. When that happens, small errors, duplicate charges, and misapplied accessorials can quietly turn into real cost.
